“The cocaine,” she replied. “You’re lucky you weren’t

completely aware of the detox. Your body also wasn’t so

used to the damn stuff that it forgot how good if felt

before the first time you sniffed it. You fit your name

pretty well.” She placed her hand on my arm and smiled.

“It’s a miracle Dr. Crier’s son found you when he did.” She

squeezed my arm. “I’ll check on you later.”

She walked away, and when I closed my eyes again, I

fell asleep instantly. When I awoke the following morning,

there was a doctor standing just inside the doorway of my

room. I’m not sure how long he’d been there, but when he

saw I was awake, he walked to the edge of my bed. As he

neared, I looked at the name written on his white lab

coat—Dr. David Crier.

“How do you feel?” he said.

He dropped his hands into the pockets of his lab coat.

He had eyes the color of dark chocolate, and except for a

thin layer of wispy gray hair above his ears, he was bald.

He reminded me of Mr. Henkley, the playground duty

officer at my elementary school. I used to sit on a swing

and watch Mr. Henkley from a distance, his bare head and

round face like a giant basketball. He never spoke much,

but he was always smiling, and I used to wonder what

made him smile so much. AnnMarie later told me Mr.

Henkley’s two young sons and wife died in a car accident

ten years before, and he’d been working at the school ever

since.
